Day 4: Rhine River cruise and Bacharach

July 23, 2014 After the best breakfast buffet ever (!) we were given a tour of Lorch by a local guide. There was a church with a handmade oak altarpiece made in 1483. We also saw an old watchtower where soldiers defended the town from enemies. After the tour we caught a ferry on the Rhine River to the town of St. Goar, and rode a train up to Rheinfels Castle. We saw the ruins of the castle's dungeon, battlements, pharmacy, cellar and more. There was a breathtaking view from the tower. We boarded a river cruise boat to Bacharach and climbed another medieval tower.

Tips!

# Bring a small flashlight (or use a flashlight phone app for the castle tour

# Wear shoes with traction for slippery castle steps

# Walk around neighborhoods and get a taste of ordinary life

# It's a good idea to bring a small laundry kit so you don't have to spend hours at the laundromat
