Day 3: Arnhem and travel to Lorch

July 22, 2014 Today we met Henry, our intrepid bus driver! In the morning we drove to Arnhem, our last stop in the Netherlands to visit the Open Air Museum which is dedicated to preserving buildings from Holland's agrarian history. We saw windmills, wash houses, paper making house, typical farm houses and shops from the Middle Ages. We had a special pancake lunch (a Dutch specialty) before boarding the bus for a five hour drive to the Rhine Valley.

As we neared our destination, Reid gave us a brief history on feudalism and the history of Germany. We passed multiple castles along the Rhine River. We also saw mile of vineyards on the mountain slopes. We stayed in the small town of Lorch in a beautiful, modern hotel which was formerly a Bauhaus-style school building. We dined in a restaurant which was owned by local vintners and featured local wine as well as excellent cuisine. On our walk home we could hear a group of Germans singing outside a cafe. We are definitely in Germany!

Tips!

# Practice using your German phrases

# Remember the German mentality:
"Ordnung muss sein!" (There must be order)

# Use time traveling on the bus to get to know some of the other people on your tour
